Exploring Smartphone Camera Functionality
In this assignment, you will become a pro at your phone's camera settings. You can READ THIS blog to get your started. It explains the cameras used in smart phones.
You can also opt to use your personal camera, though there will be a lot more functionality to explore. If you chose this, focus on the sensor specs, shooting modes, how to adjust aperature, ISO and shutter speed, using a timer, zoom, and any other features that are cool or useful to you.
Instructions:
Using the above guiding questions, you will explore the function of your phones camera. The above questions are to guide you. You may not be able to answer all of them. The questions themselves should not be on your page, you simply are putting information on your page. For example, for question 1, create a sentence that says, "My phone model is an iPhone 12 Pro Max".
Step 1: Create a new SharePoint Page called “Camera Functions”
Step 2: Research your phone's camera features using the guiding questions provided.
Step 3: Find a YouTube video tutorial on your phone’s camera and/or camera app and embed it on your SharePoint Page. Include 3 points from the YouTube video that you found interesting or descirbe something new you learned about your camera.
Here is an example: How to use the iPhone Camera.
Step 4: Take at least 20 photos using your phone camera while experimenting with different settings, features, and techniques.
Review the basics of composition and lighting in photography and experiment with these elements in your photos.
Review the basics of focus and depth of field in photography and experiment with these elements by adjusting the aperture and f-value settings on your phone camera.
Review the basics of editing in photography and edit your photos using the editing tools on your phone camera or third-party editing apps.
Step 5: Select six of your best photos and add them to your SharePoint page to showcase your work. Include captions describing the settings or adjustments made to capture the photos.
Step 6: Share your SharePoint page with the class and discuss what you learned during the activity. This will be done in class after spring break.
Step 7: Provide feedback on other students' work and discuss what you liked about their photos and what you learned from their findings.
Guiding Questions:
What model is your phone?
Does your phone camera have a timer? If so, how do you set it, and what are some situations where you might use it?
Can you adjust the shutter speed on your camera?
Can you adjust the exposure on your phone camera? If yes, how do you do it, and why might you want to adjust the exposure?
What is portrait mode on an iPhone, and how does it work? What are some tips for taking great portraits using this feature?
What are the different aspect ratios used for, and how do they affect your photos? Can you change the aspect ratio on your phone camera, and if so, how?
What is the zoom amount on your phone camera, and how does it work? Are there any tips for using the zoom feature to take better photos?
Can you adjust the ISO and aperture settings on your phone camera? If yes, how do you do it, and what are some situations where you might want to adjust these settings?
What is HDR, and how does it work? Does your phone camera have an HDR mode, and if so, how do you use it to take better photos?
What are some third-party camera apps you can use to enhance your phone camera's functionality? What are some of the features and benefits of these apps? Hint: There are some apps that allow more control over you camera that you may want to try HERE (VSCO, Snap Seed, Camera +, etc.)
